Bangla Panel is a free, data-light utility page for daily life in Bangladesh. Bangladesh maritime storm signals No. 1–11, explained

Bangladesh uses a numbered signal system for its sea ports (Chattogram, Mongla, Payra, Cox's Bazar). The number is not a simple 1-to-11 "badness scale" — it encodes three things at once: how strong the storm is, how close it is, and which side of the port its centre is expected to pass. Signals 1–2 are distant alerts, 3–4 are local cautions, 5–7 are Danger signals (winds 62–88 km/h), and 8–10 are Great Danger signals (winds 89 km/h and above, hurricane force). Signal 11 is special: it means communication with the storm warning centre has broken down and catastrophic weather is feared. River ports use a separate, smaller 1–4 set, so a "No. 3" on the river is not the same as a "No. 3" at sea.

Why signals 5, 6 and 7 are "the same" but different

Newcomers often assume No. 7 must be much worse than No. 5. In wind terms it is not — all three describe the same 62–88 km/h storm band. The difference is geometry: whether the cyclone's centre will cross the coast to the left of the port, to the right of it, or straight over it. That detail matters enormously to mariners, because a northern-hemisphere cyclone's right-front quadrant carries the strongest onshore winds and the highest storm surge. A port kept on the storm's right side (No. 6 / No. 9) can face worse surge than the raw signal number suggests. The same left/right/over logic repeats one level up in the Great Danger set: 8 mirrors 5, 9 mirrors 6, and 10 mirrors 7 at hurricane intensity.

Great Danger Signal No. 10 — what it actually means

No. 10 is the highest working signal in the system. It means a severe cyclone with sustained winds of 89 km/h or more — often far more — is expected to pass directly over or very near the port. Historically, No. 10 has been hoisted for the deadliest storms to strike the Bay of Bengal coast, and it is the trigger for mass evacuation to cyclone shelters coordinated by the Cyclone Preparedness Programme's volunteers. If No. 10 is announced for your area: move to a shelter or a strong concrete building immediately, keep away from the shoreline and low embankments because storm surge — not wind — causes most deaths, carry dry food, water, medicines and documents in a waterproof bag, and follow volunteer megaphone instructions. Do not wait "to see how bad it gets".

FFWC danger levels: what "X cm above danger level" means

The Flood Forecasting & Warning Centre (FFWC) monitors water levels at stations on the Ganges/Padma, Brahmaputra/Jamuna, Meghna, Surma-Kushiyara and other rivers. Each station has a pre-defined danger level — a water height at which the river begins to flood adjacent low-lying land protected by that gauge. When a bulletin says a station is "45 cm above danger level", it means the water surface is 45 centimetres higher than that threshold, and nearby floodplains, chars and unprotected homesteads are likely already inundating. Rule of thumb: above danger level means an active flood situation; roughly a metre or more above usually indicates a severe flood with embankment stress. Rising versus falling trend matters as much as the number, so always read the FFWC forecast alongside the level itself.

Cyclone season and basic preparation

The Bay of Bengal has two cyclone seasons: pre-monsoon (April–May) and post-monsoon (October–November). The pre-monsoon window has produced many of Bangladesh's most destructive storms because the shallow, funnel-shaped bay amplifies storm surge into the low-lying delta. Sensible preparation is cheap: know the location of your nearest cyclone shelter before the season starts, keep phone power banks charged when a depression forms, store drinking water and dry food for 2–3 days, and keep NID cards and land documents in a sealed plastic bag. The 2.5% remittance incentive: legal channels vs hundi

To pull remittances out of informal hundi networks, the government pays a cash incentive — 2.5% of the remitted amount — on money sent home through legal banking channels, mobile financial services and licensed exchange houses. The incentive is credited automatically with the payout for ordinary amounts; larger transfers may need simple paperwork such as proof of employment abroad. The practical math matters: a hundi dealer may quote a slightly better street rate, but the legal route adds 2.5% on top of the bank rate, creates a paper trail that helps with loans and visas, and carries none of the legal risk — hundi is illegal on both ends of the transfer. How to read a load-shedding area schedule

When generation falls short, distribution companies publish area-wise load-shedding schedules: your feeder or area name mapped to one or more time blocks when supply may be cut. To read one, first identify which company serves you — DESCO (northern Dhaka), DPDC (southern Dhaka), NESCO (Rajshahi/Rangpur region), West Zone (Khulna region) or REB/palli bidyut samity (most rural areas) — then find your feeder or block name on that company's schedule page, which is usually your neighbourhood or substation name rather than your postal address. Schedules shift day to day with the supply-demand gap, so treat published slots as "most likely windows", not guarantees, and expect extra unscheduled cuts during heat waves and gas shortages.

NID corrections and e-passport status

National ID services live at services.nidw.gov.bd. For a correction (name spelling, date of birth, etc.): register an account with your NID/form number and face verification, apply under the correction category with scanned supporting documents (SSC certificate, birth certificate — the SSC certificate carries the most weight for name/DOB), pay the government fee through mobile banking, and track the application status in the same portal. E-passport applications and status checks are at epassport.gov.bd — you need your Online Registration ID (OID) or application ID plus date of birth. Both services are free to check; anyone demanding money "to speed up a status" is running a scam.

No. 4 means a storm is nearby and the port is likely to be affected, with winds up to 51–61 km/h — disruptive, but not yet a Danger signal. The serious escalation points are No. 5–7 (Danger, 62–88 km/h) and No. 8–10 (Great Danger, 89 km/h+). Treat No. 4 as your cue to prepare, because signals can jump quickly.

What does "50 cm above danger level" mean in a flood bulletin?

Each FFWC river station has a fixed danger level — the height where flooding of nearby low land begins. "50 cm above" means the river is half a metre over that line, so adjacent floodplains are likely already flooding. Whether it is rising or falling matters as much as the number.
